Talking business is dicey, no matter how you slice it. And yet patient happiness is reliant upon the fiscal stability of your business. Providing superior care means earning profit. In turn, profit allows you to provide superior care. Dr. Feck shares his thoughts on why it is important to consider the sometimes-shied-away-from world of finance in relation to your practice. Hello Doctors and Team Members, I find that many dentists are uncomfortable discussing the word “profit.” Yet, it couldn’t be more important. Though there are exceptions, monetary success is often a symptom of unquantifiable achievement as a clinician: the happiness of your patients and the quality of your work. If you are providing exceptional care and genuinely helping others, profit will naturally follow. In turn, monetary success allows you to continually invest in better education and equipment. Financial success and general success perpetuate one another. During DOCS Education’s introductory sedation course (Oral Sedation Dentistry), I take about fifteen minutes to share a little about the potential that sedation dentistry has to help you reach your business objectives. I’m careful to alert the audience as to the subject matter—as it is separate from the actual course. Without fail, a few dentists get up and walk out. Maybe they don’t own their business. Maybe they do and are already well-trained in finance—or maybe they feel it is inappropriate to discuss profit. However, profit is not a four-letter word—LOSS is. Loss is what prevents us from truly helping our patients. We always strive to bring the most relevant information to your practice in the DOCS Digest, and this issue focuses on the needs of your business. What are some ways to bolster your standard of care, the satisfaction of your patients and consequently, your financial wellbeing? We discuss those very things in this issue. If you are a member, your practice should have already received hard copies of the DOCS Digest. The Winter 2015 DOCS Digest is also available online: Our digital flipbook is a replication of the print magazine, complete with articles, case studies and interviews. The entire publication is yours to read via your computer, tablet or phone, and can be accessed here. Enjoy. Read the Digest Sincerely, Dr. Anthony Feck
