What do Lauren Hutton, Brigitte Bardot and Madonna all have in common? They’re all part-time quantum physicists! Just kidding. These three blonde beauties all have something in common, and it’s smack dab in the middle of their faces: gap teeth. Gap teeth, or diastema if you’re a fancy-pants, has been getting a lot of attention recently in the fashion world as more and more models with a chasm in their chompers strut down runways and are featured in cosmetic campaigns.

Finding beauty in a conventionally imperfect smile is not just a current American trend: In Ghana, Namibia and Nigeria, diastema is regarded as being a sign of beauty and fertility, and some have even had them created with cosmetic dentistry. In France, they are called “dents du bonheur" or "lucky teeth," and in Australia, gap-toothed children are said to be predictors of future wealth.

This is not to say that many dental patients aren’t looking to enhance their smiles and use cosmetic dentistry to achieve the perfectly straight smiles of their dreams, dentists just need to remember that there are a varied many interpretations of what's considered beautiful and for some, that beauty comes in the form of an unconventional, unique smile. “Cookie-cutter beauty doesn't stand out," Heather Muir, the beauty news director of Allure magazine observed. “We’re shifting to something more quirky.”
