DOCS Education Fellow Melissa Taylor Burton, DMD, is a graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry and a fellow of DOCS Education. She practices at Taylor Made Smiles in Franklin, Mississippi, with her father, Dr. James Taylor. Why did you choose to become a dentist? I loved watching my father, a dentist, and shadowing him at work. He created a safe environment and wonderful one-on-one relationship with each patient. I couldn’t have had a more inspirational example. What do you like the most about dentistry, and what is the least appealing? Sedation dentistry has made a powerful impact on my practice. These are especially rewarding patients to care for because they arrive so frightened I can hardly coax them into the chair. But the time they leave become so comfortable they no longer even need sedation. The least attractive aspect of dentistry is easy to identify: patients who either break their appointments at the last minute or don’t show up at all. In your opinion what is the biggest problem facing dentistry today? Managed care. Do you have a mentor in the dental profession? My father, Dr. James Taylor, completely influenced who I am today and what I do. I simply wouldn’t be doing this without having the benefit of such an extraordinary role model over the years.
